AAD 529 PROJECT 2

This was the first week in the 2nd project of the course. This project will involve creating a poster to promote a region of New Zealand. The first part of the project involved researching travel posters to get an idea of how they are presented to appeal to holiday makers. I started out my research on Pinterest, where I created a board of tourism posters.

The posters I looked at were places of interest to myself to get an idea of how a country or region was presented.

I like this design because of the bold colours and simple shapes. The way the colours change in hue as they get “further” away create a sense of depth. The railcar is a very iconic part of Wellington and is instantly recognisable to anyone who knows the region. The simple shapes create an effective image whilst the red of the car creates contrast.

I like this poster because the colour contrast is very bright and cheerful. The use of shading makes the church look round from a flat image creating depth. The sky makes the image very warm and inviting and the little sailboat in the corner create a holiday feel for the poster.

I really like the paint style of the poster, it gives it a very classical look which suits the location perfectly. Making the image look very calm and serene. Being a big fan of trains and railways, im taking inspiration from the railway style poster and I will reflect something similar into my travel poster if possible. Although New Zealand isn’t as big on rail as the UK, there are still plenty of places with railway history or even the wellington cablecar.

AAD529 week 4

This week we had to look at Typography and how it plays a role in Promotional artwork. Like most tasks thus far I started searching Typography on Pinterest and understanding what type of fonts are used for what. Learning the history of typography was interesting and understanding how fonts can make something seem outdated or modern.

The biggest lesson I took away from this week was understanding “sans” and “serif”, what works on print and what works online. I will use this in my promotional poster going forward as I have better knowledge of what works together.

I took alot away from researching on Pinterest as what fonts are used where and how they are displayed on the page.

Looking at both old and new promotional material was interesting to see how typography has developed over the decades. I noticed that modern style fonts tend to be straighter and “easier” to read. I use the term easier loosely as the older fonts are still very legible. Older fonts tend to have bigger serifs with more detail in each letter, these can still work in todays market dependent on what is being advertised.

The font I chose for my promotional poster was “poor Richard”, This is an Adobe font. The reason I chose this font is because it is similar to the “pictures” part in the Disney logo creating a link between the logo and the poster. I chose black and white to create contrast. The typography at the top matches the “Lion King” text. I was toying with the idea of a contrast font but as of yet I couldn’t find a good contrast.

AAD529 WEEK 3

This week we had to look at composition and understand how we can incorporate this into our alternate movie posters. I started out by researching on Pinterest various techniques of composition, whether it be in a poster or general advertising. The link for my board will be below and here I will explain why I chose to put these on my board.

Golden ratio – For this example I chose the “Audery Hepburn” poster. I found this pleasing to the eye because it follows the golden ratio design of Fibonacci’s spiral guiding the eye exactly where it needs to go.

Rule of Thirds – For this I chose the tree in the field, this is a classic example because the main subject is on two intersections. Making it easy to look at.

Gestalt – For this I chose the well known “2 faces or urn” picture. Which ever you choose to look at both are clearly defined here.

Positive and Negative space – For this I chose the “sherlock” poster, like the Gestalt image it uses negative imagery to create a second image within. This example doesn’t cram the space creating a pleasing image to the eye.

Grid Based Layout – For this I chose the noodles poster. I like the simplicity of it making it easy to look at. This example clearly defines invisible lines that the designer chose to follow.

Visual Hierarchy – For this I chose the “you will read this first poster”, this is a great example of visual hierarchy as your eye is drawn to exactly what the designer intended you to see. They did this by changing font size to make an impact.

Consistency – For this I chose the button picture. What the designer has done in the second part of the picture is to keep the same colours / typography to create a uniform image, making it more pleasing to the viewer.

Alignment – For this I chose the red poster. like with the Q poster the text is purposely placed to read where is intended by the designer. Making it visually appealing.

Going forward I will be using these ideas in my future projects to create a more pleasing piece. In my current movie posters I feel I have achieved some of these “rules”, after asking for some feedback from my peers I realised I can make them better.

As in the second example I have moved to gradient to make it more like a sunset and I think it helps bring the piece better together. Another Improvement would be to move the disney logo to the “sun” as to draw the eye.

What works well in this poster is:

contrast (The black against the bright colours) , Rule of Thirds (The animal silhouettes are on the joining segments.)

AAD529 WEEK 2

This weeks task was to understand the principles of design, using 2 premade pdfs, I had to write a description of each element as well as creating examples.

After researching each element I had a better understanding of how design works, although my examples could be improved I see how I can use these elements in my future artwork.

The second PDF was about principle, I found this one more challenging than the other task as I had only a basic understanding of Principles. This is something I wish to improve in the future.

Lion King Movie Poster

This week I worked on 2 alternative posters for the lion king, originally inspired by the sunset palate from my thumbnail sketches. The first one is a representation of “the circle of life”. The second one uses the same colour scheme but has a lion head silhouette instead of the circle of animals.

My photoshop/indesign skills are still developing hence why some of the images aren’t great quality.

what I like about the first poster is how warm it feels and how the colours are like a savannah sunset. What I think can be improved is the size of the animals, to make them stand out more.

What I like about the second poster is how striking the lion head is, again the colour scheme giving a warm feel. What I think can be improved is maybe by adding a faint lion face into the silhouette.
