Travel Poster – Analysis

Swedish designer Bo Lundberg uses colourful geometric designs that have strong references to 1970’s design as well as to Bauhaus and modernism.  

In his poster, Hamburg 74 the simplified, black silhouette of a famous bridge in Hamburg is set against a background made up of six horizontal blocks and a circle. The colour scheme of a warm red and magenta, as well as the circle, suggest a setting sun. The blue and green of the two bottom blocks refer to the water underneath the bridge and the green horizon in the distance. Smaller white and yellow circles along the bridge suggest car headlights creating a rhythm and thus a dynamic composition.  

The round shape of the bridge is repeated by the circle in the background and contrasts the stark horizontal lines of the background blocks. Although he works with shapes and not with forms, the design still has depth because of the use of perspective and vanishing points.  


Maria Umiewska, The Doctor’s House in Kyiv

Maria Umiewska, a Ukrainian designer, often combines photographs with type and/or hand-drawn elements in her works. 

Her poster The Doctor’s House in Kyiv features a black and white image of a building, built in 1928 in the soviet constructivism style. Some of the windows are coloured in with yellow suggesting lights, softening the monochromatic image. The geometric shapes in the background echo the form of the building and refer to constructivist paintings. Those shapes are filled with a slightly transparent gradient of warm orange, pink and yellow suggesting a sunset or sunrise.  

The word Kyiv in the foreground is placed in the middle third of the composition and has the same size as the image and shapes in the background. The letters are filled with a gradient of cool green and blue. The contrast of the complementary colours adds visual interest.  

The K leads the eye to the bottom third, which is filled with details about the building. The text is arranged vertically, echoing the yellow stripes as well as suggesting the foundation of the building or composition.
