Life in the Social Media Slow Lane

Robin Slow: Untapped Promotional Potential  

 Robin Slow is an anomaly because he is a successful New Zealand artist who hardly utilizes Social Media platforms to promote his art. However research and marketing statistics show that if he were to tap into the promotional potential of Social Media he could reach a wider audience and increase both the sales and prices of his work.

When you google Robin Slow you get images of his paintings and then reviews from his various exhibitions [1] [2][3] but his Facebook page does not appear in the google options.  

To find out about the artist I had to read online articles written by Galleries he has exhibited in. This is where Robin Slow needs a website or a comprehensive Facebook Page to provide an easily found and accessible site for people interested in his work. 

To find his Facebook page you need to type in Robin Slow Facebook and then his page only has 55 followers and no real detail about his art, his work or his philosophy.

This is a missed opportunity because “Facebook is still the most used social platform with nearly 2.45 billion monthly active users“[4]” Users 65 years and older are the fastest-growing group on Facebook. Facebook use is prominent among high-earners‘. [5]  

This would provide Robin with a platform to reach retirees with the ready funds to purchase his work.   

Robin Slow does not have a personal presence himself on Instagram (Only through Galleries posting photographs of his work), this is again a missed opportunity because “1 billion people use Instagram every month which makes Instagram the second-ranked traditional social network in terms of active users, behind Facebook.” [7] “Once used mainly by teens and young millennials, Instagram continues to grow as one of the most popular social media platforms, and the data tells us that it’s not going to change anytime soon.”[8]  

As a middle aged woman I follow Instagram accounts and so do my teenage children. I know that my mobile phone alerts informing you of updates are an instant way for the creator of the story to reach their audience directly, Robin Slow could utilize this to alert followers to upcoming exhibits or art sales.  

By building a presence on both Facebook and Instagram Robin Slow would target an audience ranging from teens through to older retirees. He would also reach beyond the geographical borders of New Zealand. 

Lisa Chandler, another Tasman based artist is active on Facebook and Instagram and used both as a platform during the Covid-19 Pandemic to join the Artist Support Pledge.[9} This linked her with other artists around the world.[10] This has been a phenomenally successful campaign that has raised the profiles of artists across the globe.{11] 

Robin Slow does have a LinkedIn Account (https://nz.linkedin.com/in/robin-slow-963b9516 ) which unlike his Facebook Page does have an ‘About’ section with a brief description of his Art development and philosophy and also a succinct timeline of past exhibitions. LinkedIn is a valuable Platform for connecting with other creative colleagues.

Although LinkedIn connects people across various businesses and industries the ‘new kid on the block’ for artists and creative industries is Behance “the world’s largest creative network”. It has 12 million users, who have viewed projects on Behance over 4 billion times. By joining a community composed of creative types Robin Slow would raise his profile amongst other artists. He would need to engage with other users by liking and commenting on their works, building up connections and relationships. 

One way Robin Slow could target a wider audience would be through video clips on Youtube. 

Youtube is the second most visited site in the world. It has over 2 billion monthly users, 50 million users creating content and the 35+ and 55+ age brackets are the fastest growing demographics.[14]  

Releasing short video clips describing his work and processes would allow Robin Slow to interact with a wide audience. Videoing his exhibitions and his artist statements would be a powerful tool to increase viewings of those exhibitions. 

Another platform he could use to target a younger demographic would be Ello (a global community of artists dedicated to creative excellence). “Ello is a RU YouTube channel that has over 3.7 million subscribers. Vimeo is another Video platform Robin Slow could utilize. Vimeo is the world’s largest ad-free open video platform, where like-minded creative people have built a supportive community of individuals with a wide range of passions. Vimeo has 170 million monthly viewers, 715 million video views and 90 million registered members.[16] 

Robin Slow has already achieved success within New Zealand but with a targeted Social Media Presence he could raise his profile and achieve more sales. However he would have to be prepared to commit the time to the various platforms, posting, uploading videos and images and keeping them updated and current, I presume the time required for those campaigns is a factor in his decision to keep a low Social Media Profile.

Lisa Chandler : A Local Artist Achieving World Wide Success

I have chosen to write about an artist who I regard as a role model, Lisa Chandler.

Lisa is a local Tasman Artist who I first met when she won the Landscape Award at the Nelson Regional Art Awards in 2007.

Lisa has been a finalist in a number of major New Zealand art awards including the National Contemporary Art Award (2015), the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award (2018, 2015) and the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award (2015, 2014 and 2012).

Lisa graduated with a MFA (Hons) from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, Auckland in 2012 .She held 10 solo exhibitions, and has been selected for numerous group shows including ‘Cruel City’ at The Suter Art Gallery, Nelson, New Zealand and the ‘International Art Survey’ Beijing, China.

In 2013 Lisa participated in an artist residency in Singapore supported by the Asia New Zealand Foundation, and the following year was invited back for an international collaboration project. Lisa regularly exhibits in Singapore and belongs to the international artist collective ‘Instinctive’.
In 2014, LIsa spent two months in Beijing on the Red Gate Residency.
In 2016, following a four-month residency at the Leipzig International Art Programme in Germany and inspired by the strong painting scene and art community in Leipzig,Lisa set up a base in the city and has a permanent studio at the well known Spinnerei art hub.

To quote Lisa,
In my paintings, I am constantly searching for a balance between abstraction and figuration. Urban structures and people intertwine through a process of layering, obliterating and tracing. Images are painted in, painted out and painted over. The history in the layers of paint traces the transformation of urban space. This intense, time-consuming layering process, is sometimes offset by faster paintings, that offer a contrasting raw and unfinished aesthetic. Alongside my large-scale paintings, I also create works on paper, often including collage and printmaking techniques”.


Her first major solo exhibition in a public art gallery in New Zealand opened in February 2019 at The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatu, in Nelson, New Zealand.

“Superficially the style of the paintings owes much to pop art’s flat expressionistic slathers over a bricolage of charged imagery — Robert Rauschenberg in particular comes to mind — but beneath that is a humanist lifeforce, elegant melancholy and anger that seems to be channelling the wartime imagery of British neo-romantics like Eric Ravilious, or Henry Moore’s drawings of Blitzed London—and the raw anguish and frustration of German new objectivity. For all that, and one could easily go back further to Picasso’s Guernica, and Goya’s Third of May 1808, or even to Renaissance paintings of battles and massacres, this is resolutely contemporary painting, virtuosic at points, speaking to us in the here and now, taking its cue from the image and atrocity-saturated media bombardment by which we experience the world.
It makes you feel something in these jaded and empathetically fatigued times, and how often can you say that?

That review sums up why I admire her style and her constant drive to push the boundaries both with her handling of different mediums and with her subject choices.
I was fortunate to have the chance to see ‘The Dividing Line’ Exhibition at the Suter Exhibition and I agree with Andrew Wood that it is Lisa’s ability to provoke an emotional response in the viewer that elevates her work beyond other artists.
I am in awe of the determination, drive, focus and hard work that Lisa Chandler has shown in pursuing her career as an artist. Her global success proves that being a Nelson based artist is no barrier to realising your creative dreams.
She has an active and constantly updated Face book page where she promotes exhibitions and also individual work for sale. She belongs to a wide variety of Artist groups.

She has been part of the New Zealand Artist Covid-19 Challenge where she has created work in response to the Pandemic and she has joined the Artist Pledge to support other artists by spending a percentage of her own sales on others work.


Lisa Chandler is an inspirational role model to all local Tasman artists and one day I hope to follow in her artistic footsteps by becoming a successful and self supporting painter.

Esme Upton- Bio of a fellow artist

Esme’s Watercolour Self-Portrait

My earliest memory was when I was 5 years old, in Sister Roberta’s classroom. I still remember that wonderful smell of wax crayons.” despite Esme’s love of drawing from a young age she was not allowed to take Art as a subject.

The Dominican nuns who were my legal wards, thought Art was not useful for a girl and delegated me to Sewing.” However Esme was not to be discouraged and she ‘would draw non-stop and paint at every opportunity.’ As she grew older she found new artistic outlets, “As a teenager I got the opportunity to design and paint posters for a charity ball…that gave me direction to be more confident of my creativity.” When she left school she worked as a Florist and after her children were old enough to all be at school she took various Art Classes.“I learnt the fundamentals of paint and its many forms and techniques. I gained a lot of experience using watercolours and was introduced to figure work and portraiture.” Esme joined various Art Societies and exhibited her work.

Esme is inspired by the Impressionists “for their spontaneity and painting of everyday life and their use of pure pigments.” If she could own one painting it would be “‘The Waterlily Pond’ by Claude Monet. it has always fascinated me how he made so many from the same subject. The painting is of a bridge going over a pond filled with lilies, it is a very vibrant picture with pure colour, the brush strokes have an isometric rhythm throughout the picture which I find restful.”

Esme responds to Art both visually and emotionally “Painted images always provoke emotion and curiosity in me. I have a desire to try their ingenious techniques or style.

Esme enjoys working in various mediums.

“I enjoy pencil and charcoal as it’s is a medium that is always available for use indoors and outdoors. It is not very costly and can capture an of the moment record.”

“Watercolour I find more difficult as it dries so fast but I love that you get translucent colours. The layering of colours, or glazing techniques is my preferred application to this medium. I have done a series of monotone portraits where glazing has been the key to building up my images.”

“Acrylics I have explored in great lengths and have tried most of the techniques depending on my subjects. It is also fast drying and I apply in thin glazes.”

After moving to New Zealand ,from Zimbabwe, Esme chose NMIT and doing a Bachelor of Art because “it was a lifelong dream and to equip myself for employment in the future.”

Esme has found the start of the course challenging because ‘ learning all the different programs at such a fast rate, because it’s all new technology to me and the media subjects are challenging.” However she is enjoying “all the subjects, photography and the fundamentals of the camera has opened a new alertness around me.” Esme has also “enjoyed meeting so many wonderful people that have the same passion as I do.”

Incredible Ink !

We had our first Printing Experience and I discovered this addictive, yet maddening medium, where you never really know how the image will turn out until the big reveal !

Monotype print. Unfortunately I had too much ink on parts of the plate
but as a first attempt I was relatively pleased with it.
Second Monotype attempt, more even tone achieved. I like her slightly creepy appearance.
Painted and rubbed away print (Acetate sheet overlaid on top of an image). I like the movement implied in the windswept hair.

Another session recreating Avigdor Arikha. This time his cherries.

Challenges Faced

Getting the thin translucent layers to keep their luminosity.

(Not applying too much paint).

Achieving the dark tones and highlights on the cherries.

I am pleased with the finished result but it does not capture the freshness of Arikha’s work.

“He belongs more to a classical tradition of painting than to the Pop revolution that first propelled him to national attention in the 1960s. Then, the sweet everydayness of his cake and pie pictures looked like cousins of Andy Warhol’s soup cans. But where Warhol was cool and ironic, Thiebaud was warm and gently comic, playing on a collective nostalgia just this side of sentimentality. He pushed himself as a painter—experimenting with brushstrokes, color, composition, light and shadow. The cylindrical cakes and cones of ice cream owed more to such masters of the still life as the 18th-century French painter Chardin, or the 20th-century Italian Giorgio Morandi, as critics have pointed out, than to the art trends of the time.”​
