The story behind the award-winning novel, Auē

Thirty-eight-year-old Becky Manawatu is the winner of New Zealand’s richest literary award for her debut novel, Auē. I spoke with her on Zoom, not long after the Level 4 lockdown in New Zealand. It soon becomes clear, in both the book and our korero, how the damage wrought by colonisation drives this debut author’s award-winning story.

Of course, Becky is also a graduate of NMIT’s Diploma in Writing for Creative Industries, so this is a story worth celebrating!
