Joe Rogan. Comedian, mixed martial artist, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) commenter, actor and podcaster.
I first heard of Joe through Tim Ferriss’ podcast when he was a guest. His podcast The Joe Rogan Experience is an unedited and what appears to be an unscripted conversation of approximately 3 hours with friends and guests, definitely not one for tender ears. It is one of the most popular podcasts in the world and receives over 30 million downloads a month. The podcast is sustained by advertising that is announced before each show, products are spruiked allowing his content to be downloaded for free. Initially the podcast started out as a weekly broadcast with fellow comedian Brian Redban, the two of them “sitting in front of laptops bullshitting”. From the outset most of the guests were either comedians or MMA fighters. With time the show has diversified to include philosophers, physicists, authors, artists, musicians and body hackers with a number of shows released each week. In 2012 it was named as iTunes “Best Comedy Podcast” and has been recognised by TIME as one of The 10 Most Popular Podcasts of 2015.
Joe comes across as an affable bloke, certainly doesn’t mince his words and is never shy of an opinion or controversial subject. He’ll often tread where others fear to go, conversing on the recreational use of marijuana and psychedelics, (which he is a staunch advocate of), conspiracies, and alien/human interaction.
There’s a fairly consistent spread of numbers across the various platforms with the boost of free downloads of his podcasts appealing for many. Joe’s primary social media platform is his podcast. He often updates his Twitter feed with information relating to his podcast and his comedy routines along with other interesting, often unrelated snippets. All his webpages cover much the same content with the exception of Higher Primate which he uses to sell merchandise.
I was unable to find any evidence to substantiate but I speculate Joe’s initial demographic audience would have been males in the age bracket of 18-55, predominately followers of MMA and his comedy routines. I suspect these demographics would change with the diversification of his podcasts content.
